In the next class we will be reading about people's experiences in education and sharing our own. Please think about the following questions and be prepared to share some stories, opinions and examples from your own experiences. In the comments, please briefly answer one of the questions.

What is your first memory of school?

What teacher influenced you the most?

What is your favorite/least favorite thing about school?

How do you feel about club activities?

How do you feel about the importance of testing?

Did you have a native English teacher in your school? What were they like?

Did you go to cram school? How was your experience?

Were there any foreign exchange students at your school? Did you learn anything from them?

Have you ever studied abroad? What did you learn from your experience?

What are some of the good/bad things about your experiences at TUFS?

Would you like to continue your studies after TUFS?

How will you continue learning as an adult?

What are some issues in education that concern you?

  1. Testing is important in order to know the level of students and what students cannot do. Acyually, however, many students including I sometimes study only for tests and forget almost everything after that, so I wonder whether testing is effective for students' studying.

  2. I think testing is important, because it can check what students learned, and how much they mastered, but I also think testing is not the only thing to check a student. Not only testing, but also activities, etc.

  3. Did you have a native English teacher in your school? What were they like?
Yes. When I was a high school student, we had a native English teacher to help us practice English conversation. But he seems like a crazy man. When he was in a bad mood, he became irritated and even kicked the desks and the door. It made me feel scared to attend his class.

I actually loved to go there. It's not equal that I loved to study!LOL I really liked my friends and teachers who met there. So I prefered going there than going my elementary and high school.

  5. I have been going to cram schools since I was an elementally school student until now. I know almost all of people regard going to cram schools as a tough, boring experience but for me, it was and it is a pleasure.
When I was an elementally school or a junior high school student, the classes at school is soooo boring because I felt them too easy. So I wanted to learn more high levered things and I was starving the knowledge.
In cram schools, there are so many clever students and I could absorb much knowledge there. It acted as a stimulus for me.
And now, I'm going to a cram school of French conversation.
In TUFS, at first or second grade, we have many class of conversation, but after third grade, we have few. I'm starving the opportunities to speak French. So it is still a pleasure for me.

  6. There have been lots of good things about my experince at TUFS so far.

One of them is that I could train my German skill and have a good relationship with my friends through the play at the school festival.
Next year I studied abroad one year, but thank to this experience, I could be confidence with that I can live in the completly new place and do the best even in the defficult situation.
    It made me mentally strong.

  7. Have you ever studied abroad? What did you learn from your experience?
I have studied abroad for a year. It gave me opportunities to meet many international students.I studied with students from other countries and tried to understand them, including their culture. Getting along with people who have totally different backgrounds was not so easy, but it broadened my outlook remarkably and allowed my character mature.

  8. I have attended another university before I entered TUFS. So I can comment the good or bad things of TUFS compared to another university.
In TUFS, first or second-year students must participate in school festival, Gaigosai. They must cooperate with their classmates in order to make their cooking store and drama complete. Through cooperating with their classmates and experiencing of doing together, they deepen their relationships. Schools, including universities are not the places where students study. Schools are also the places where students build good human relationships, through various experiences, let them become mature.

  9. I went to cram schools when I was a junior high school and high school student. The cram school during junior high school was ok, but I didn’t like the next cram school. It was a major cram school chain but used only video to teach, so I went there and watch videos that showed lectures of famous teachers. Learning from video was so boring. I couldn’t concentrate watching them and snoozed so many times…

  10. (Did you have a native English teacher in your school? What were they like?)
---Yes, there was an ALT(Assistant English Teacher) in my school and he came to our class once a week.
But only the first-grade students can take his class,
so second & third grade students have no chance to talk with native English teacher.(That's why I decided to go to a language school after school...)

  11. I have studied abroad for 2 weeks. When I was high school student, I went to the U.S to study English.
Now, I know many friends who go to study abroad but then I didn't knoe anyone.
Therefore, everything I experienced there is new. Of course I learned English but there are more important things to me. I learned foreign culture and made friends from different countries.

  12. We always had three or four native English teacher in my high school. Many of them were so friendly that I could communicate with them easily. I talked with them not only during classes, but also in a corridor. We had a good relationship. One of them came to see our live!

  13. (How do you feel about club activities?)
Actually, I have been attending some clubs since I was a elementally school student. I like it because we can make deeply friendship through club experiences. And I believe it teach us many things that teachers don't tell us.

  14. How do you feel about club activities?

Although many people, especially parents, think that club activities are a mere hinderance to schoolwork, I think they are wrong. Club activities are a great way to keep you focused and motivated in life. Also, friendship made through club activities often turn out to be extremely strong. I cannot imagine a campus life without club activities.

  15. Have you ever studied abroad? What did you learn from your experience?

I have studied abroad for about 1 year. When I was abroad, I learned the communication with people has different background. Because communication with foreign people is very difficult, at the beginning I only tried to suit my idea to theirs. But gradually, I learned the most important thing is not to suit myself to others but to respect each other. After I noticed that, I really enjoyed my stay.

  16. I'm sorry that I didn't post a comment. I didn't really understand about homeworks in this class.
I know it's too late to post, but I'm gonna write my opinion.

Have you ever studied abroad? What did you learn from your experience?

I've studied English in Canada for 10 months.
I learned that when people from different culture get to know each other, they should try hard to communicate and know one another. Otherwise, some misunderstanding might be caused. So, when you put yourself in a different culture,I think the most important thing is trying to tell what you think honestly. But you have to pay respects when you do that !

  17. How will you continue learning as an adult?

Sorry that I didn't post my comment last week.

I'd always want to keep learning something. Some companies has there own training system or some kind of support to obtain new qualification. So I want to be in an emvironment that I can keep learning new things. Also I really want to master more languages in the future!

  18. How do you feel about club activities?

I think it's very important for students. In club activities, we can make different community from classmate. And in club activities, there are older students and younger students. So we can learn the social skills.
